10. App release notes
This page records what each version of the Visio Companion phone app changed for you — what was added, what got better, what was fixed. How to upgrade the device firmware is in 4. Phone app & web preview → Firmware upgrade (OTA).
The current version number is shown on the app's Settings page. Please include it when reporting a problem. Entries start at v1.0.6; earlier versions are not listed separately.
Where to get the app:
- Android APK: gilabs.xyz/products/mobile-apps (latest build). After downloading, tap the file to install; if asked about "unknown sources", allow it as the system prompts. Ask your GI Labs representative for a specific older build.
- iOS: App Store — China mainland · US and other regions.
- HarmonyOS: Huawei AppGallery.
All of these are also listed on Downloads.
v1.1.6 · 2026-10-01
Features marked firmware 1.1.6 required need a device update first; see Firmware release notes. Android builds are available from the official download page. iOS and HarmonyOS use their app stores; availability depends on store review.
New
- Copy recordings to the phone or delete them from the device over USB or Wi-Fi in View recordings; unavailable while recording (firmware 1.1.6 required).
- Bluetooth control connection, EGO1GS only (firmware 1.1.6 required): enable in Device settings to start / stop recording and change settings. Preview, recording copies, and firmware updates still need Wi-Fi or USB. Off by default.
- Report a problem from the device page: send diagnostic logs and a note. Offline reports are saved and sent automatically when the phone has internet.
- Request repair under Settings → Support & after-sales: submit a request and track it in the app. See Support & repairs.
Improved
- Longer capture metadata, with explicit overlength messages (firmware 1.1.6 required).
- Explanations when EGO1GS pauses preview due to heat; a new Thermal protection field in Device info (firmware 1.1.6 required).
- The app explains why a device refuses to record, such as a firmware upgrade in progress.
- Scan settings now uses a full-screen camera view.
Fixed
- EGO1GS was incorrectly displayed as EGO1.
- iOS firmware downloads could not list versions without a cellular connection.
v1.1.5 · 2026-09-17
Includes all v1.1.4 updates below, with no additional feature changes. v1.1.4 is deprecated; this release replaced it. Android is distributed through the official download page; iOS and HarmonyOS are distributed through their app stores, subject to review.
v1.1.4 · 2026-09-15 (deprecated)
Replaced by v1.1.5; v1.1.6 is the newest release documented in this manual.
New
- Device and camera temperatures in Device info.
- Instructions for copying SD recordings to a computer over USB.
Improved
- Smoother app operation with lower power use.
- More reliable reconnect after OTA; network connection is maintained during firmware download.
- More stable and faster HarmonyOS preview and transfer.
Fixed
- A newly connected device could show the previous device's information.
- Parsing of some settings QR codes.
v1.1.3 · 2026-08-26
iOS became available on the App Store on 2026-09-09; Android and HarmonyOS builds were also released.
New
- Two more cloud providers: the upload destination can now also be Google Cloud Storage or Azure Blob, selected on the cloud settings page alongside the existing providers.
- See whether a device is encrypting recordings: Device info gains a status line showing whether the current recording is encrypted. Display only — it neither shows nor touches any key material.
- Hand detection switch: the video section of Device settings gains a hand-detection switch, off by default. Switching off applies immediately; switching on during a recording waits for that recording to end. Shown only on devices that support it.
- Scan settings from the photo library: besides scanning a QR code live, you can import a QR image from the photo library — usable even without the camera permission.
- New settings-QR format: the app reads the new (encrypted) settings QR; the old format keeps working.
Improved
- Cloud fields use each provider's own names: bucket, key and region fields on the cloud settings page now use the selected provider's terminology, so you can copy from that provider's console as-is.
- The scan confirmation page lists capturer ID and location ID when the QR carries them, so you can verify before writing to the device.
- A failed scan says why: an unusable QR now produces a message naming the kind of problem, not just a failure.
Fixed
- Switching provider and back emptied saved settings: on the cloud settings page, switching to another provider and back to the one the device uses cleared the filled-in fields and reset the endpoint to the preset (e.g. Hangzhou → Beijing). The device's actual configuration is now restored as-is.
- The cloud recordings list used the wrong configuration: the phone keeps one upload configuration, and it was used to list cloud recordings whichever device was connected, leading to an empty list or a permission error. The app now checks that the configuration matches the device's upload destination, otherwise it uses the address the device reports.
- Dragging the volume slider left exited the page (iOS): the voice-notice volume slider sits near the left edge, and dragging left was taken as a back gesture. Fixed; the slider is no longer interrupted by page scrolling either.
v1.1.0 · 2026-08-10
Released for iOS, Android and HarmonyOS; the iOS build went live on the App Store on 2026-08-24.
- iOS: App Store — China mainland · US and other regions
- HarmonyOS: Huawei AppGallery
- Android APK: gilabs.xyz/products/mobile-apps
New
- Out-of-date firmware is flagged: on connecting, if the device's firmware is more than three versions behind, the app suggests upgrading and links to the download page.
- Adjustable voice-notice volume: Device settings gains a volume slider, 0 to 100; 0 is silent. Applies immediately and is remembered by the device. Shown only on EGO1GS (the variant with a speaker).
Improved
- A failed upgrade says why: when the device refuses an upgrade, the page names the kind of problem and attaches the device's diagnostic text for you to include in a report.
- More patience after an upgrade: the device takes a while to reboot and install; the app now waits about two minutes before judging the result. Previously a device that was rebooting normally could be reported as failed.
- The result is the version the device reports after rebooting, not cached information from before.
- Faster upgrades over USB: transfers run at the cable's real speed and show progress.
- More stable upgrades: the app pauses its own video preview during an upgrade to give the transfer the bandwidth.
- Cleaner upgrade page (one percentage, not two), and one consistent style for prompts across the app, without stacking.
Fixed
- A recording that uploaded but couldn't be deleted kept re-uploading: the app now remembers the upload succeeded and only retries the delete.
- Contradictory upgrade-failure page: a failed upgrade showed both a spinning "installing" bar and "failed" for a while; it now switches straight to the failure message.
- One line on the upgrade page didn't follow a language change; the live-preview status line had the same problem. Both fixed.
- Some strings weren't translated (delete-failure prompt, IMU panel labels for acceleration / angular velocity / temperature). All now follow the selected language.
- A previously downloaded firmware file was wrongly treated as current after the same version was re-published in the cloud; stale images are no longer installed.
- Nameless devices in the hotspot list: when a device doesn't broadcast a name, the list and the connection use the device code instead of showing a blank entry.
- Preview reconnecting in a loop on Android after entering and leaving the preview page repeatedly.
- USB not used after re-plugging the cable: the USB link is re-detected and used again.
v1.0.9 · 2026-08-03
Released for Android.
New
- Recording reminder switch: Device settings gains "Recording reminder". When on, the device ticks every few seconds during a recording so you can hear that it is recording without looking at it; when off, it stays quiet. Off from the factory; applies immediately and is remembered by the device. Shown only on devices with a speaker (EGO1GS).
Improved
- Camera resolutions per hardware model: EGO1GS gains 1728×1200 and no longer lists the two resolutions it can't use; EGO1 keeps 1920×1080 / 1600×1296 / 1600×1200. Previously both models shared one list, and EGO1GS could be set to a resolution the device rejects.
Fixed
- Cloud upload stuck on one file, blocking the rest: recordings that have already uploaded are now recognized and removed from the queue instead of being re-uploaded in full every round. Uploads are also "no-overwrite" now, so a recording already in the bucket is never replaced by a later file with the same name.
v1.0.8 · 2026-07-29
Released for Android and HarmonyOS.
- HarmonyOS: Huawei AppGallery
- Android APK: gilabs.xyz/products/mobile-apps
New
- Privacy policy on first launch: the first launch after upgrading shows the privacy policy, with the full text a tap away; device discovery, location and similar features start only after you agree. You are asked again when the policy changes.
Improved
- The phone really follows the device after Wi-Fi setup: saving a Wi-Fi could previously leave the page at "looking for the device on the network" — on Android there was also an unannounced system prompt to accept first. The phone now rejoins your chosen network itself, falls back to the system prompt only if that fails, and the whole flow has a timeout.
- Configuring Wi-Fi over USB no longer drops the connection: after saving, the app says "Wi-Fi saved; the phone stays connected over USB" — the device joins the Wi-Fi, the phone side stays put.
- Scan-to-Configure joins the Wi-Fi in the code automatically: after the device switches to the new network, the phone joins the same network before looking for the device.
- Recording to the phone no longer also uses the SD card: with "Phone (USB)" selected, the recording is written only to the phone; start / stop voice notices remain. Capture metadata comes from what is saved on the device; GPS is still attached by the phone.
- The "Connecting", "Device in use" and "Device offline" pages share one style, and Device settings has clearer sections.
Fixed
- "Device in use" right after reconnecting: after configuring Wi-Fi, resetting to the setup hotspot or force-quitting the app, the device thought the previous connection was still alive and made you wait for its timeout. The app now identifies itself, so the same phone can reclaim the connection immediately.
- Capture metadata showed stale local values instead of the device's, and recordings made to the phone could carry text that was typed but never saved. Both now follow what is saved on the device.
- "Not connected to the device hotspot" while you were: a false negative in the first seconds after joining.
- Format SD card reported failure when the card had in fact been formatted, with no feedback during the process. There is now a clear in-progress state; if the device doesn't answer in time the app says "still formatting, check back later", and only an explicit refusal counts as failure.
- The cloud recordings list was incomplete or wouldn't load: it was capped at 100 entries and failed when the phone was on the device hotspot or USB. It now pages through everything, and these cloud requests always use the link that has internet.
- Setup hotspots vanished from discovery after entering and leaving the device list repeatedly, or while a permission prompt was unanswered.
- Two device-specific issues fixed: the preview not starting on the camera page, and diagnostic text under "Details" not being copyable.
v1.0.7 · 2026-07-27
New
- Single-camera preview by default, one tap to go back to both: live preview used to push both eyes at once, which cost data and heated the phone. It now shows one eye by default; switch in the preview area when you need to check stereo overlap. The choice is sent to the device so only the stream you're watching is transmitted, and it is remembered.
- See and forget the device's saved Wi-Fi networks individually: the Wi-Fi settings page lists the networks the device remembers (the current one marked) and lets you forget them one by one, so moving sites no longer means resetting the device to its hotspot.
- A separate "status report" channel for cloud upload: recording upload and status reports share the bucket and credentials but each has its own path prefix and switch, so you can report device status without uploading recordings, or the reverse. (The switch is hidden on firmware too old to support status reports.)
- Hand-detection boxes in live preview: when the device firmware has hand detection on, boxes are drawn on the preview in real time so you can confirm the hands are in frame.
Improved
- Connecting is no longer a silent spinner: the new connection page shows the device's connection type, address, elapsed time and the network the phone itself is on, with a one-line explanation of where it is stuck (e.g. the phone is on the wrong Wi-Fi). "Details" copies a diagnostic report to send with a bug report.
- Reconnecting after network changes or signal drops is more robust, and joining the device hotspot fails less often.
Fixed
- Stuck on "Connecting" when someone else holds the device: only one phone or web page may be connected at a time. Previously a refused connection only showed a spinner; the app now says the device is in use, and connects automatically when the other party disconnects — no restart needed.
- Couldn't reconnect to your own device after moving it from hotspot to Wi-Fi: the app sometimes failed to recognize the device after the switch and required re-adding it.
- Tapped device A, connected to device B when several hotspots were nearby. The app now always connects to the one you tapped.
- Live preview that broke up or froze on a weak network or a busy phone now recovers by itself instead of needing you to leave and re-enter the page.
v1.0.6 · 2026-07-22
New
- Scan-to-Configure: apply a whole set of device settings from one QR code, built for bulk deployment. See 8. Scan-to-Configure.
- Cloud upload: enter an Aliyun OSS or AWS S3 bucket and access key in the app; recordings then upload to your own bucket automatically over Wi-Fi. See 9. Cloud upload & fleet status.
- Recording to the phone: record the device's data straight to the phone, with the phone's GPS coordinates attached to record where the capture took place.
- Audio recording switch: choose whether recordings include microphone audio (EGO1GS only, which has the microphones). Applies immediately.
- A separate Device settings page: video bitrate (4 / 6 / 8 / 10 Mbps) and camera resolution (1920×1080 / 1600×1296 / 1600×1200) are adjusted here.
- Firmware downloads by model: the download page asks for the device type and hardware model (EGO1 / EGO1GS) first, so the wrong image can't be flashed.
- Device voice notices follow the app language: switch the app between Chinese and English and the device's spoken notices switch too.
- App version shown on Settings, to make bug reports easier to match up.
Improved
- The app follows the device across networks: after the device moves between its own hotspot and a Wi-Fi, the app finds it again by itself; removing and re-adding the device is normally not needed.
- Online status in the device list is judged from the actual data stream, which better reflects whether a connection will work; a device on its own hotspot shows "AP" rather than Wi-Fi.
- The recordings list shows the device's own capture metadata, marks the session being recorded, and sorts same-named sessions correctly by suffix.
- Uniform tap targets for dialogs and buttons; the keyboard no longer covers input fields.
Fixed
- Scanning for Wi-Fi interrupted live preview: the network scan during Wi-Fi setup made the preview stutter or drop.
- The app kept looking for the hotspot after the device had moved to Wi-Fi, requiring a manual reconnect.
- No more spurious location-related prompts when connecting to a device.
